Here's the deal:

Headsets are shitty, headphones are amazing.  Any audiophile can tell you that's a true statement.

Gaming headsets are made with cheap parts (even though they say they're not) and never perform as well as a good set of stereo headphones.  Not even those 5.1 or 7.1 headsets.

Here's what I have, and tbh they're the best headphones I've ever used for gaming (even better than the megalodons from razer)

Audio Technica ATH-AD700

and then I use this clip-on mic

I have those same ones as well along with a 5 dollar mic I picked up at fry's. (Due to Abstracts suggestion) Pretty BA headphones. I am not disappointed.
